Acid reflux surgery in Northern Virginia is a safe and effective method of alleviating the symptoms of GERD. GERD occurs when there is a dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter. So, most acid reflux surgeries aim to reinforce and strengthen this sphincter. Laparoscopic Fundoplication 
One of the most common surgeries for GERD is the laparoscopic fundoplication. This is an outpatient procedure. The surgeon performs it under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon makes four small incisions and inserts his tools. The upper portion of the stomach is then wrapped around the bottom of the esophagus. This creates a valve between the stomach and the esophagus. The goal here is to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter, which prevents acid from flowing up into the esophagus.
There are two modifications to this procedure. In the Nissen fundoplication, the portion of the stomach is wrapped completely around the esophagus. However, in the Toupet fundoplication, the portion of the stomach is only wrapped partway around the esophagus.
Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication
This is a minimally invasive procedure. Instead of making incisions in the abdomen, this procedure is performed through the mouth, without any incisions. The surgeon inserts a device called the EsophyX through the patient’s mouth, down the esophagus to where it meets the stomach. Then, the surgeon creates sutures and tissue folds around the lower esophageal sphincter. This tightens and repairs the muscle.
LINX
The LINX Reflux Management System is a newer device for treating GERD. It is one of the safest and most effective surgical treatments for GERD. This system uses a small, ring-like, flexible band of magnetic beads enclosed in titanium. The surgeon places the band around the esophagus, just above the stomach to help keep the lower esophageal sphincter closed. This effectively prevents the contents of the stomach from lowing back into the esophagus.
Your surgeon performs this procedure laparoscopically, using general anesthesia. You are free to go home the same day and resume your normal diet.
