WHAT IS PEG AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

PEG stands for percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. A PEG is a feeing tube which is placed through the abdominals directly in to the stomach in order to allow proper nutrition in to the stomach.

Feeding tube formulas are based on your recommended caloric intake and combined with the vitamins, medicine and fluids prescribed by medical professionals to address your body’s specific needs. 

PEG tubes may last for months or years however they do need to be monitored by your doctor and sometimes require removal or replacement in order to address an old or blocked tube. 

Complications of feeding tubes can occur and include leaking around the tube, aspiration, bleeding and perforation. Be sure to discuss all of the risks and benefits of feeding tube placement with your doctor.
