Feeding Tube Issues

If you are suffering from feeding tube issues, Maryland Bariatrics is here to answer all of your questions.

Below you may find some of the most common issues associated with feeding tubes along with some general suggestions to resolve the issues.

It is important to note that these are only suggestions and that your best option is always to consult with your doctor directly.

The Feeding Tube Is Damaged

If your loved one has a feeding tube it is important to constantly be checking the tube to ensure proper functioning.

If you notice that the feeding tube is no longer functioning properly or that the tube itself has torn or split, contact your doctor immediately.

For those with a low profile tube you may be specially trained to be able to change it on your own.

The Balloon Is Leaking

You should check that the balloon which holds the feeding tube steady is functioning properly each month.

In many cases medication, stomach acids, and how the tube is cared for may affect the longevity of the balloon.

If you notice that your loved one’s feeding tube balloon is low on water you should add sterile water.

You can find more detailed instructions on filling the balloon here.

Plugged Feeding Tube

If not properly flushed out, the feeding tube can become plugged.

Always take care to properly flush the feeding tube with water before, after and in between administering medications.

If you see that a feeding tube has become plugged, you should try to flush it with 5-10ml of warm water.
