The Obalon Balloon System: This doctor-monitored system involves swallowing three balloons allows you to feel full more quickly. You’ll follow diet and exercise guidelines.

Orbera Balloon System: A surgeon uses an endoscope to place this balloon system in your stomach. This program also requires behavior adjustment and dietary restrictions.

ReShape Balloon: This particular balloon system works best for patients who have a lower BMI. 

In an intragastric balloon procedures, a bariatric surgeon places a saline-filled balloon into your stomach. This gives you the feeling of being full while eating less.

Often, candidates for this surgery have tried to lose weight by making diet and lifestyle modifications and have failed.

Advantages of Non-Surgical Weight Loss Procedures 

The main advantage of these procedures is that they are reversible and make no permanent changes to your gastrointestinal system.

Do I need to lose weight before the procedure?

No, you don’t need to lose weight before your nonsurgical weight loss procedure.

Does health insurance cover any nonsurgical weight loss procedures?

Unfortunately, no. Health insurance doesn’t typically cover the cost. However, there are options that make procedures affordable.

How much time off work will I need?

This depends on the procedure you have. You may be able to go home the same day of your procedure. But we still recommend taking 3-5 days off work to allow your body to rest and adjust to the changes.

How much discomfort should I expect?

Depending on the type of procedure, you may experience little to no symptoms. Most commonly, patients experience nausea and/or vomiting and abdominal discomfort.

How much weight will I lose?

This depends on how much excess weight you have to lose, how closely you follow the guidelines for diet and physical activity, how well you incorporate behavior changes, and a few other factors. However, studies have shown that patients lost two to three times more weight with a nonsurgical weight loss procedure than with lifestyle changes alone.

How will my diet change before and after the procedure?

Your provider will give you dietary guidelines to follow in order to prepare for your procedure. It is crucial that you stick to these guidelines. First, you shouldn’t consume any food or liquids for 12 hours before your procedure.

After the procedure, you typically start with a clear liquid diet and progress to full liquids, and then pureed foods, then soft foods.
