A few years ago, Tora Medical came out with a product called LINX that revolutionized the gastroenterology space. Needless to say, patients were clamoring to find relief through the system, but is LINX covered by insurance? We explore more, below.
What is LINX?
The LINX Reflux Management System is a treatment where titanium wrapped magnets are placed in the esophagus in order to control discomfort from GERD.
Is LINX Safe?
Yes, in 2012 the FDA declared LINX to be a safe and effective device to be implanted via laparoscopic surgery.
Is LINX Covered by Insurance?
Insurance coverage has long been a conversation around this minimally invasive surgery as it has changed over time.
Originally, it was covered under Medicare however most commercial insurance companies refused to cover LINX as opposed to alternative anti-reflux surgeries.
The reason why LINX was not covered was that in its early days it has been considered too new to offer a solid reason to cover it for patients.
However, in 2017 LINX was finally granted the medical coverage it warranted and it is now covered by some commercial insurance companies.
LINX isn’t a covered benefit for most insurances at this time but there are options for paying for the surgery
Who is a Good LINX Candidate?
If you have been diagnosed with GERD and have not found relief of your symptoms through lifestyle alterations and traditional medical treatments you may be a candidate for LINX.
However, the only way to truly know if LINX is right for you is to discuss it with your doctor.
